The Sigma 500mm f/5.6 DG DN OS Sports is a super-telephoto prime lens designed for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. It delivers long-distance reach with high optical performance while remaining significantly more compact and lightweight than traditional 500mm lenses.

Released in 2024, it is part of Sigma’s Sports line, which focuses on durability, speed, and precision for demanding shooting conditions.

Optical Design and Image Quality

This lens is engineered for maximum sharpness at extreme distances.

  • Optical construction: 20 elements in 14 groups
  • Special glass:
    • 3 FLD (low dispersion, similar to fluorite)
    • 2 SLD elements for chromatic aberration control
  • High resolving power suitable for high-resolution sensors
  • Strong contrast and minimal color fringing

Sigma achieved a compact design without using diffractive optics, relying instead on advanced glass elements.

Result: very clean, sharp images even at full 500mm reach.

Aperture and Depth of Field

  • Maximum aperture: f/5.6
  • Minimum aperture: f/32
  • 11 rounded aperture blades

Effects:

  • Good subject isolation at long distances
  • Smooth background blur (bokeh), especially for wildlife
  • Limited low-light performance compared to faster lenses

Autofocus System (HLA)

The lens uses HLA (High-response Linear Actuator):

  • Fast subject acquisition
  • Accurate tracking for moving subjects
  • Quiet operation for video and wildlife

This makes it highly effective for:

  • Birds in flight
  • Sports action
  • Fast-moving animals

Image Stabilization (OS2)

  • Built-in Optical Stabilization (OS)
  • Uses Sigma’s OS2 algorithm
  • Up to approximately 5 stops of stabilization

This is essential at 500mm, where even small movements can cause blur.

Build Quality and Handling

The lens is designed for professional outdoor use:

  • Dust and splash-resistant construction
  • Magnesium and high-strength composite materials
  • Compact for its class:
    • Length: ~236 mm
    • Weight: ~1365 g

Includes:

  • Tripod collar
  • Lens hood
  • Weather sealing

Despite being a 500mm lens, it is light enough for handheld shooting, which is a major advantage.

Controls and Features

Physical controls on the lens include:

  • Aperture ring
  • Focus limiter switch
  • Autofocus mode switch
  • Optical stabilization modes
  • AFL (custom function) buttons

These allow quick adjustments in fast-paced shooting environments.

Focusing Capabilities

  • Minimum focus distance: 3.2 meters
  • Maximum magnification: 0.17×

Not designed for macro, but allows relatively close framing for wildlife.

Real-World Performance

From field use and testing:

  • Very sharp across the frame
  • Reliable autofocus for action
  • Strong stabilization for handheld shots
  • Good contrast even in challenging light

It is especially effective for:

  • Bird photography
  • Wildlife tracking
  • Outdoor sports

Advantages

  • Excellent sharpness and image quality
  • Much lighter than traditional 500mm lenses
  • Effective stabilization system
  • Fast and accurate autofocus
  • Professional-grade build

Limitations

  • Fixed focal length (no zoom flexibility)
  • f/5.6 not ideal for low-light environments
  • Still relatively large despite being compact for its class
  • Premium price
